Welcome to Newark

A diverse and active college town that maintains a family feel

Newark is an active and energetic college town located in northern Delaware, very close to Wilmington and the Maryland border. With the local economy being spurred by the University of Delaware, both students, professionals, and families are drawn to the Newark area for school and job opportunities. Both Philadelphia and Baltimore are just a short drive away. Those looking to stay in a tight-knit community, without the hustle of a large city may find the Newark area very attractive. The area offers several green spaces, perfect for relaxation or studying, and is an excellent place to raise children.

Newark has an amazing balance of suburban and urban life. The main street in Newark is a commercial area, with great restaurants, bars, and entertainment for college students, families, and young professionals alike. Staying active is another great pastime for residents in the area, especially with university-sponsored activities such as intramurals, going on a run in the various parks, or going for a round of golf on a warm, summer evening. The Newark area truly has something for everyone.

Local Lifestyle

Newark loves to embrace the active lifestyle that comes with a vibrant university community, paired with a love for the outdoors and gorgeous green spaces. Pike Creek is an ideal place for couples and growing families looking to step away from the hustle and rush of city life, while still being within a quick drive or train ride away from the big cities. Limestone Road runs through the town connecting it to others in the region. Like other towns in the Wilmington area, Pike Creek is known for an expanding community of young commuters.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Deer Park Tavern has been a staple of the community since 1851. Their Jumbo Lump Crab Bombs is a bomb of lump crab meat served with traditional sides. The Bourbon Grilled Salmon tastes good enough to make you forget it is the healthy option. Taverna Rustic Italian puts a rural spin on refined Italian food. The Meatball is made with escarole, radicchio, celery, tomato, cucumber, whipped ricotta, and red wine vinaigrette. Home Grown Cafe has vegan, gluten-sensitive, and vegetarian options in a family-friendly environment. Their brunch is a local favorite. Grain Craft Bar & Kitchen is a casual restaurant with burgers, soups, salads, and wraps.

Things to Do

White Clay Creek State Park has 37 miles of trails and disc golf. Bryan’s Field Trail is a challenging option for experienced mountain bikers. The park is a favorite spot for fishing at White Clay Creek because it is heavily stocked with largemouth bass. The Deerfield Golf Club is a beautiful setting for local weddings. The club and golf course covers 145-acres with the backdrop of an ancient forest.

Sports fans enjoy live games at the University of Delaware. The football team is a local favorite, but they have basketball, soccer, tennis, and baseball games also. Newark Restaurant Week is a week where the community dines at their favorite restaurant to contribute to the non-profit organization whose mission is to build a prosperous and healthy community in Newark.
